When is the best time to workout?

I get asked this question a lot, by friends, family, clients , etc. Basically everyone is intrigued by this question. I think it's partially because everyone is looking for an easy fix to losing weight and getting healthy. I mean if not there wouldn’t be an entire industry of supplements and diet pills promising to get you thin quick, Or maybe they just want to maximize their time at the gym since most don’t really like it but they go because they figure it's the only way they will lose weight.

To answer your question on what time is the best time to workout; it's WHENEVER YOU HAVE TIME TO WORKOUT. I know that’s never the answer that people are looking for but its the truth. There is no '“magic” hour or “golden” hour where your body will burn more fat. The truth is you will burn the same amount of calories in the morning as you would in the afternoon or evening. However, what will change is your energy and time available to workout. If you know you’re NOT a morning person then don’t plan to workout in the morning. You will most probably start off great the first couple days. You’ll be super pumped and energetic for the new regimen but after a week you see your energy lacking and the amount of times you’ve hit the snooze button and missed the gym turn into an entire month. Before you know it you’ve given up on the gym because you can’t seem to fit it into your schedule. That's not what you want.

You want to be able to go to the gym at a time where you know you have the energy to complete a good workout and not half ass it. Let’s be real, yes you may be at the gym but if you’re not doing the exercises properly or you’re not going hard enough then you might as well be home. You could get hurt and won’t really doing much besides mentally feeling good about yourself for getting to the gym, which is fine but you may not get the results you're looking for and you’ll end up getting frustrated and quitting.

Another thing to consider when deciding what time to go to the gym is your schedule. If you always have meetings, social gathering or errands to do after work which will prevent you from going to the gym, you may want to consider going in the morning or maybe even during your lunch break. It might sound like a great idea to go to the gym right after work but if the possibilities are slim to none on a daily basis then what good is it to schedule in an afternoon workout time?

Life is crazy and we tend to get busy from one minute to the next. I get you girl, but if you’re serious about succeeding in your fitness journey, you need to be honest with yourself and make sure you schedule it at a time where you know it will work. That’s not to say that some sacrifices may have to be made but at the end of the day you are paying back your body with the gift of health. I go at 5am because my schedule is crazy in the afternoon. I also have a lot of energy in the morning but once 5pm comes I start crashing. There is no way I can picture myself dead lifting a PR at the time.

Adding a workout into your schedule can take some getting used to  especially if you’ve never done it. However, once you start it becomes part of your daily routine, just like brushing your teeth.
