Rest and Recovery: Reasons to Get Enough Sleep Every Night

Have you ever heard of the saying, "You can sleep when you die?"  While I get the meaning of this saying, I don't really agree with it. I mean who doesn't love to sleep? Not only is it awesome, but it's also extremely important for your overall health. It's just as important as eating healthy and working out.  

Despite sleep being extremely important for our overall health, many of us aren't getting enough of it. (I'm guilty of it). I fall asleep at around 10pm or 11pm and wake up at 4:45am. Yikes! Even though I've gotten my body used to this lack of sleep it definitely isn't good for me. Lack of sleep can make you feel drowsy and depressed. It also hinders your ability to remember things and take in information and increases your cravings. Lastly, its linked to weight gain. Now you can see why it is not a good thing to get little sleep. 

Now that we've covered the negative side effects of lack of sleep,  let's talk about the good things that getting enough sleep provides.

Reasons why sleep is good

- Good sleepers eat fewer calories

-Better athletic performance

-Decreased risk of heart disease

-Better concentration

- Improves immune function

 

Along with nutrition and exercise, good sleep is one of the pillars of health.You simply can not achieve optimal health without taking care of your sleep.
