Winter is gone and summer is here. The weather is heating up, we are nearly breaking 100 degrees here in Miami, and your wanting to take your workouts outside while still being comfortable. That’s a great idea but you do have to take a couple precautions so the weather doesn’t get to you. Even as a native Miamian, the sun can get the best of me. These tips that I am going to share with you will allow you to keep with your fitness goals and enjoy the change of scenery.

  1. Hydrate: Make sure to take plenty of drinks that help hydrate you. Stay away from anything with caffeine like coffee, energy drinks, pre-workout, because those will dehydrate you. Instead you can drink things like coconut water, gatorade, water with lemon or cucumber.

  2. Don’t go at peak hours: Instead try to go early in the morning (before 12pm) or later in the evening (after 4). Although Vitamin D is great for us, too much UV rays is not. The sun is usually beaming the highest from 12-4pm.

  3. Take Breaks: Don’t be afraid to take breaks. You may be in the best shape of your life but just the fact that you are training outside and your body isn’t used to it can completely change everything. The elements such as heat and wind can really tire us out because we have to work harder than if we were inside. Don’t beat yourself up if you feel you can’t work as hard as you would if you were in doors. The truth is you're actually burning more calories by just doing it outdoors.

  4. Eat a banana: Pre-workout should consist of a banana since it has potassium. Sometimes being in the heat and sweating can cause our potassium to drop and we may feel weak.

  5. SPF matters: Wear a hat and SPF because skin cancer is a serious deal. Your already taking the time to do doing something good for you and your body so don’t ruin it. SPF 30 usually does the trick and you might wanna take a towel in case it drips in your eyes... that burns!

What are some activities you enjoy to do outdoors?
